We are the body and bride of Christ. For description purposes we wear the moniker mentioned by Paul in Romans 16.16. We are the “church of Christ” which meets in Port Lavaca. It is our goal and our challenge to be people who are in line with the teaching of Jesus. We strive to be people who live God’s Word.
We also believe that Jesus is Lord (Romans 10.10). We consider that more than just a motto, we find those words to be the principle we live by. When Jesus is acknowledged as Lord, we are saying that He is our Master, and the Ruler of our lives. In living this commitment, we find true fulfillment and purpose. It is here we find a real meaning for our existence.
In Christ, Christians are connected to one another. In a real sense, we are family. As healthy families are connected with one another, we help and care for each other because of our relationship in Him (Romans 12:9ff). In this family, we are connected as equals. Someone has well said that the "ground is level at the foot of the cross." In the family of God, no person is greater than any other. In this spiritual family, no race, color, language or nationality is better than any other (Galatians 3:28).
We are concerned with those who are hurting and need our help (Galatians 6:10). While we are interested in helping those with physical needs, of even greater importance are those who are in spiritual need. Because of this, we place an importance on sharing the good news of the Gospel with others around us. This news, which has made all the difference in our life, comes from God Himself and must be shared with others in all its simplicity, purity and truth without addition or subtraction (Revelations 22:18-19). We are concerned with sharing that Word both in our local area and abroad. We are follower of Christ (Christians) who are seeking to live in a way in which heaven will be our home.
The Church of Christ is not a denomination, neither are we a splinter from some other religious group. We do not subscribe to any modification of divine script nor will we adhere to any manmade doctrine. Jesus said in Matthew 16:18, "...upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it." And build His church He did...with power! On the day of Pentecost, A. D. 33, only days after He ascended back into heaven, Christ's church was established in Jerusalem (Acts 2).
In the New Testament we are presented with a model of His church. That model was given by the apostles and was carried out by those who became members of the Lord's church in the early days of the Christian Age. "Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers" (Acts 2.41-42).
That church was called the "church, church of Christ, bride of Christ, church of God" etc. It was the church that Christ promised to build and built, therefore it was Christ's church. What more fitting name: the Church of Christ (Romans 16.16). That was the model, and we accept the fact that we are to follow that model. To that end the Church of Christ is dedicated. We are the members of that church. "Now you (the church) are the body of Christ, and members individually” (1 Corinthians 12.27). The church is the Lord's body and He is its head.
We believe that "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 1017). One must first hear gospel of Jesus Christ, the wonderful story of what Jesus did for us, and is continuing to do.
We believe that "without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those that diligently seek Him" (Hebrews 11.6). The faith that God will do what He has promised can only come through regular fellowship with Him through His Word and through worship.
We believe that "unless you repent you will all likewise perish" (Luke 13.3). "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3.23). We believe that "with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation" (Romans 10.10). One must confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
We believe that "he who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned" (Mark 16.16). Peter told his listeners, on the day of Pentecost to "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call" (Acts 2.38-39). Remission of sin occurs with baptism, not with the decision to dedicate ones life to Jesus. Christ adds men and women to His church upon compliance with these requirements.
If you are interested in learning what God has to say to each and every one of us, you will enjoy visiting and worshipping with us. It is our desire to speak only where the Bible speaks, and to remain silent where it is silent.
Please join us at your every opportunity!
